Hello and welcome to this, your favourite cycling advocacy-related newsletter.
WHERE'S THE FIRE?
With yet more extreme weather in the southern hemisphere as Rio roasts in temperatures brushing 40c, and floods here in the UK, the climate is the story that isn't going away. But there are also more positive tales to tell, where cycling is concerned, so buckle up, and off we go.
BIG STORIES FOR CYCLING ADVOCACY
LIFETIME BANS FOR KILLER DRIVERS?
A new nationally representative poll by YouGov suggests the majority of Brits would support lifetime driving bans for people who cause death by reckless driving. Driving is a privilege, not a right, but so often killer drivers are able to get their licence back in a few years.
EBIKE FIRES - A HOT TOPIC
The cycle industry responds to what it calls a barrage of misinformation about e-bike fires. In the light of proposed legislation to tackle the problem, the industry wants to see better regulation of e-bikes sold direct to customers from overseas, which evade testing, even under proposed laws.
CYCLING ADVENTURE INSPIRATION
On Monday journalist Areola Eribake and campaigner Carla Francome star in London Cycling Campaign's women's network’s first webinar, and it's all about adventure. Chaired by Mariam Sayed of JoyRiders, three women will talk about setting cycling goals and mostly meeting them. The industry needs more diversity and this is what that looks like.
DIVERSIFYING CYCLE PARTICIPATION
Speaking of which. Cycling needs better participation and representation to grow and not everyone can access bikes, for sport or leisure. British Cycling is providing bikes and support for people from diverse ethnic communities and lower socio- economic groups to get into the sport, thanks to funding from Sport England and support from Trek.
VIOLENT ROBBERIES CAUSE CONCERN
A spate of violent robberies from cyclists in London, the BBC reports, has 90% of Londoners concerned for their safety. Police say they are doing all they can but the London Cycling Campaign says more is needed to make people feel safe cycling once more.

INTERESTING GRAPH OF THE WEEK:
This graph demonstrates substantial public support for driving bans in the case of lethal driving. Source
ACTIVE TRAVEL WORD OF THE WEEK:
Concurrent driving ban. When drivers are jailed for killing and seriously injuring others, their driving bans run concurrently to their sentences, often ending just as they are released from prison, or shortly afterward.
